The books that I selected were high quality, high interest books. Many fit our genre studies, others are series books. These arrived Thursday after school. I spread them out on our coffee table for students to see as they arrived Friday. They were so excited and already have selected many that they plan to read. I look forward to discussing them with my students as they enjoy them. A huge thanks to US Cellular for making this happen for my students!

Help Our Library Grow Up
I created a project on Donors Choose over the summer called "Help Our Library Grow Up". As I was weeding out books from my 3rd grade classroom library to prepare for my new 5th grade students, I noticed that there were not many for them to choose from. Plus, those that were left were not the best for 5th grade readers. I heard that US Cellular would be funding many classroom projects in September and October throughout Iowa and a few other states.

Spooktacular Event
It was so great to see many of my families at the Spooktacular Event on Thursday Night. There were so many family friendly activities to participate in. I hosted "Reading in the Dark". It's amazing how a flashlight and a dark room gets kids excited to read! Perhaps, this could be done at home!

Canadian Teachers
Today on Mrs. Crain’s Mystery Skype, we figured out that the group of teachers we Skyped with lived in Manitoba, Canada! They wanted us to help them and teach them how to Mystery Skype so they could do it more often with their students, so they will have a fun time in social studies.

Mystery Skype with Fort Worth
We Mystery Skyped a different class from Fort Worth,Texas today. They asked really good questions. Their answers really helped us locate them. When they said that they bordered another country (Mexico), we knew it had to be Texas. We knew it could not be North Dakota, because they had told us that they bordered a major body of water (Gulf of Mexico). We learned a lot from them.

Choose Kind
Grades 3-5 at Rue have been reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. In the book, August (Auggie) has been prevented from going to school because of his "facial anomalies" and the complications that come with the 27 surgeries to correct them. Auggie's first experience at school is 5th grade at Beecher Prep. Being the the new kid is hard enough, but Auggie has to also convince the kids that he is a kid just like them.
The book is filled with many great messages. One of them is, "When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind." I have seen many examples of my students choosing kind. One day when a student's fancy pencil went missing, another student offered to replace it. After school one day, I witnessed a student from another class prepare to make fun of another student and my student gave her "the look" and shook her head "no"(Although it is easy to type now, at the time I had to hold back tears.). I have also seen many examples of inclusion in the classroom when students have ensured that no one is left out of a group and helpfulness towards others. I hope you know what great kids you have! I am very proud of them!

Volume
Students have been learning about volume during Math Workshop. They were not told how to determine the volume of a 3-D object (LxWxH). Instead they had to investigate, build on what they know, create an efficient strategy, and test it.
Students building boxes to test which holds more. |
Testing two boxes to determine which holds more.
|
Some students filled boxes with cubes and found
that box b hold more. Others found the area of
each level and added them together.

Soon students determined that the most efficient
strategy was to multiply the length, width, and height.

Global Connections = Authentic Learning
Friday the 13th of September was a wonderful day for my students. Our Donors Choose project, "Global Connections = Authentic Learning", was fully funded. Last year, we participated in an activity called "Mystery Skype". Two classrooms, who did not know each other's location, connected using Skype and ask yes/no questions to try to determine the other classroom's location. Although this was fun, the best part came after. Each classroom would share information about their classroom, community, culture, etc. On another date, the classes would reconnect to work on another project together. Partnerships around the world were created.
Although we were as successful as we could be last year, participation was awkward and difficult. We Skyped using our iPad camera, which meant only two students could fit well in the screen. Projects requiring more students to participate required a lot of shuffling about. It also had to be placed on the floor (too low) or held (to wiggly). Our maps and atlases were also outdated, difficult to read, and lacking some of the cities we needed to access.
Last spring, we posted a project on DonorsChoose for a new web cam, maps, and atlases. With the help of KIA, students' families, and anonymous donors, my students will have a more enriched experience connecting with classrooms around the world. Thank you!

Global Mystery Skype
Yesterday we had the opportunity to do our first Global Mystery Skype. Our Mystery Skypes before this were all in the United States.
We narrowed down the location of the other 3rd grade class by asking yes and no questions about which hemisphere and continent they live in. We learned that they lived in the north western hemisphere but were not part of North America. That left us with only a few countries in South America. We discovered that they lived in Venezuela. That was pretty easy. They learned that we were from the United States pretty quickly.
Our biggest challenge was finding their state and city. Our first map did not have their state. We had to ask many questions. We had zero states left. We scrambled to find other maps and then we found it...Anzoategui!
We learned that their city bordered the Caribbean Sea. A few hints later we learned that they lived in Puerto La Cruz.
In the end, we visited and asked each other questions. We shared and compared information about each of our schools. We were amazed to learn that their school has around 200 students in Pre-School through 12th grade! We have around 300 students in Pre-School through 5th grade. Puerto La Cruz is warm all year long. We have hot summers and cold winters. Both classes like pizza! The students from Puerto La Cruz also like empanadas. We have a few students who eat them also. Our class would like to learn more about them.
We had so much fun learning about where the other classroom is from!

Yesterday our class got to do a mystery skype with another class. We each had a job I had the Reporter job.We asked questions for the other class to answer and they asked questions for us to answer. Then we found out that they lived in Iowa like us.They kept on asking us questions like do you live on the west side of the Missouri river or do you live on the east side of the Mississippi river. We said “No”.Then they guessed Iowa. And that’s what we did on Mystery Skype the yesterday.

Vegetable Taste Test
Today, students tasted vegetables that might do well planted in our People's Garden. After tasting, students voted for the vegetables that they would like to plant. Winners? Carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, green bell peppers, and romaine lettuce. Last, we came up with questions we would need answers to before finally planting any of these vegetables:
- How much space does the plant need to grow?
- When is the best time to plant it and when could we expect to harvest it?
- How much food will the plant produce?

WOW!
Now, I do not cry in front of the students, but, there have been a few times lately when I have had to hold back tears in the classroom.
Today, I had a student so excited to show me the writing he worked on last night. At first, I thought he was talking about accessing his Google Drive at home and adding to his draft. Even that alone would be exciting. He continued to tell me that while eating at Ruby Tuesday's last night with his family, he used his iPod, figured out how to use Chrome and their free WI-FI, and wrote his lead with a purpose in mind to add more interest for his reader. Amazing!
The other time recently I found myself with weird eyes and goose bumps was when I could not keep up with moderating the comments that were coming into my e-mail about my students' writing. Not a bad problem to have at all!
I am looking forward to many more of those moments with our students! Just wanted to share.

Perimeter "Tellagami" and "ShowMe"s
Today students received their math problem from a weird version of Mrs. Crain. (Click on video to watch our Gami.)
Students were to design a variety of gardens using only 24 feet of wood. Diagrams needed to include the dimensions and perimeters. Once they were finished they needed to decide which design was best and be ready to share their choice and reasoning.
Here are some "ShowMe"s of the most common designs.

These students thought this garden would allow more vegetables to be planted.
These students thought this garden would be easier to weed.
What were not good ideas for garden designs? stars and triangles. Why? You can't plant much in the corners!

How is Weather Measured?
Students are using our new Chromebooks to research weather instruments in teams. Each student is part of a team who has to investigate a specific weather measuring instrument, how it works, and what materials are needed to make one at school. All of this information is being added to a shared document. In the following days, students will prepare to make each instrument, make the instrument, and collect weather data.
